Tip of the day:
Don't answer the phone or make phone calls with kids screaming in the
background, dogs barking, neighbors fighting, music blaring. Whether you work from an office or from home,
background noise is unprofessional and distracting.
Article of the day:
If You Ain't Talking Good, it Can Have a Negative Effect on Your Business
Irregardless of how wonderful you are!
By Laurie Ayers
Good writing is good
business; so is good speaking. Good speaking? Perhaps I mean speaking well.
Rarely a day goes by when I don’t encounter at least one person butchering the
English language. I’m not talking about typos and misspellings; that an
entirely different article! Rather, made up words or those used in the wrong
context.
For example, how many times
have you heard someone say irregardless? Is that like regardless, which
means ‘In spite of everything; anyway’? Perhaps they’re commingling
words again, and are actually thinking of irrespective, which means
‘in spite of everything’.
Oh! Oh! Here's another good
one: She went to "get her hair did"..... Huh?? I always thought it was it's
getting your hair "done". Of course, some would argue "well if I was getting my
hair done.... I would have already went."
Have you ever heard
someone say something like "I borrowed Jack my car"... instead of Jack borrowed
my car (or I loaned it to him).
Don't feel bad (or is it
feel badly) if this describes you. If you say "I couldn't care less" well that
means there's no possible way I could care any less than I already do, so I'm
saying that I a don't give a rat's fanny - right? However often I hear others
say "I could care less." Yet that means I'm capable of caring less, so
that said, I have some amount of care.
Here is another simple
one. Something this small could cost you a customer if you get a stickler for
the English language. CAN instead of MAY? "CAN I call you?" Ummm ...If you
can't, then you probably don't have a telephone.
TAKE vs. BRING. "Did you
bring that to your dad in the other room?" It's bring it to ME, but take it to
HIM.
Ever hear a waitress say,
Ma'am, (I hate it when they call me ma'am, btw, "Miss" gets them a bigger tip.)
But I digress. When they say, "Ma'am, are you done (with your plate)?" I think
what she meant was "Are you FINISHED? Cakes are done, people are finished.
"I
checked my report and I seen another person signed up." (saw)
Is
your computer busted? Or is it broken? Busted???
Got
instead of Have; Flustrated instead of Frustrated.
Shall
I go on? If you're one of these offenders listed above, and you're a business
owner – you may want to spend a little time reviewing English 101. I don't say
that to be mean, but
if you don't talk good, it
can have a negative effect on your business - irregardless of how wonderful you
are!
